COMMITMENT & RESPONSIBILITIES

What to Expect in ISM

ISM is a rigorous, rewarding commitment. Understanding what's expected helps you prepare to succeed from day one.

ISM is an advanced, year-long course in which students explore a field of their choice. Outside of class, they meet regularly with their mentor, virtually or in person, and spend time each week learning and developing their project.

Students complete structured assignments during class while continuing their independent work primarily outside of class.

SCHEDULE

Follow a structured assignment schedule

Submit mentor journals and research logs on time

Contact and maintain a professional mentor relationship

Attend regular check-ins with your ISM teacher

Produce an original, professional-quality final product

Present final end of year presentation

Finding and nurturing a mentorship relationship is one of the most important and rewarding parts of ISM. Your mentor is an active professional in your chosen field who volunteers their time to support your growth.

Mentor meetings are student-driven. You set the agenda, bring your questions, and make the most of each session.

MENTORSHIP

Working with a Mentor

Important Note

ISM is not a study hall or free period. This program demands consistency and time-management throughout the entire year.

Start with your network

Family connections, family friends, parents of classmates, and community members are often excellent first contacts in your target field.

Research professionals

Use LinkedIn, professional associations, university faculty directories, and local business resources to identify practitioners in your field.

Reach out professionally

Craft a thoughtful, specific outreach email that explains who you are, what you're studying, and what you hope to learn from them.
