PROGRAM BREAKDOWN

Understanding ISM

What is ISM?

ISM is a full-year advanced academic course offered to high school juniors and seniors, regardless of whether they are identified as Gifted and Talented students. Students research a professional field, connect with an active community mentor, and produce an original professional product.

What Students Do in ISM

Students write journal reflections, develop original research questions, and create deliverables aligned with their chosen field. Each student works alongside a professional mentor who meets regularly to guide the project.

Why ISM Matters

ISM prepares students for the realities of college and career. Graduates consistently report that ISM gave them clarity about their future direction and the confidence to pursue it with conviction.

Many ISM students arrive at college already knowing their major with professional references that set them apart.

Student-Driven Learning

Students choose their field, topic, and direction with guidance from their teacher and mentor.

Real-World Mentorship

Each student is paired with an active professional who shares field knowledge and real career insights.

Project-Based Learning

The final deliverable is a research product, something that could act as a solution to a real- life issue.

Presentation Opportunities

Students also present to their classmates throughout the year, building public speaking and pitch skills.
